Tear trough filler

The tear trough is the area beneath the eye. Some patients have an underdeveloped fat pad here, or have had surgery to remove eye bags and now there are hollows. Strategically placed dermal filler can help.

  • Tear trough filler can treat patients with hollowness under their eyes, dark circles, looking tired all the time and puffiness. If you have any of these concerns, tear trough filler/under-eye filler is likely for you. Dr Vella adapts the technique used depending on your concern and anatomy on examination. Some patients are more suitable for a mid-face rejuvenation, which involves supporting the tear trough from below and disguising puffiness/eye bags more superficially. This will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

  • Local anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin for 20-30 mins beforehand for your comfort. The technique depends on your anatomy but generally, a small pin-prick is made in the upper part of the cheek. A cannula, which is a very fine tube, is gently inserted under the skin and filler is placed where it is required for the optimum result. Sometimes, 2 or 3 injections in the upper cheek are also needed.

  • I apply local anaesthetic cream to the area for 20-30 minutes prior to a treatment. This has a numbing effect. However, due to the use of a cannula in this area, discomfort is very minimal and this procedure is well-tolerated with most patients experiencing no pain at all.

  • Following your treatment you may have some minor bruising and swelling. This can happen with any filler treatment. Most problems related to tear trough filler are caused by overfilling the tear trough, filling the tear trough when patients actually have orbital fat pad prolapse rather than hollowness and need a mid-face rejuvenation instead (see our page on this).

  • Dr Vella uses Teoxane Redensity 2 for tear trough correction and RHA 4 for tear trough support in the upper/middle cheek.
