Marionette line filler
The lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin are the marionette lines. They can be softened with dermal filler and even support the edges of the lip to improve the appearance of a downturned mouth.
Marionette line filler FAQs
-
Marionette lines are lines that appear from the corners of the lips to the chin/jawline. They tend to happen as we get older and are due to reduced collagen and elastin, the movement of fat pads and a genetic predisposition.
-
Dermal filler is a fabulous treatment for marionette lines. Filler is places gently in the hollow areas created by the lines as well as at the corners of the lips in order to give this area a lift. After 2 weeks the filler has had time to settle in and the lines are softened or eliminated.
-
Marionette lines take their name from marionette string puppets that have prominent lines in the same place. The medical name is melomental folds.

Dr Vella will apply local anaesthetic cream to the area for 20-30 minutes before your procedure. The injections are limited to as few as possible and a very fine needle is used. Sometimes, a cannula is used - this is a needle with a blunt end, which when placed under the skin is very comfortable. If you are worried about this please discuss it with Dr Vella during your consultation.

The majority of filler treatments have no downtime at all and patients return to their daily lives immediately after. However, all injectables come with the risk of a bruise that can last 7-10 days. It is sensible to plan your treatments at a time when you do not have important engagements the week after.
