The muscles used for chewing can widen the jaw and create a masculine shape to the face. Botulinum toxin is injected into this muscle just above the jawline in order to make it smaller. This creates a slimming effect.

The masseter muscle is located at the corner of the jaw. It is used for chewing and in some patients, particularly those who clench their jaw a lor or grind their teeth, it can become enlarged.
Botulinum toxin reduces the strength of this muscle so that it becomes smaller over time. As an extra benefit it can reduce clenching and teeth grinding.

Jaw slimming treatment takes about 8 weeks to reduce muscle size and this will improve with repeated treatments.

This treatment is usually 4 injections to each side of the jaw - 8 in total. The needle used is very fine and patients usually find they experience only mild discomfort. If you are worried about this please let your doctor know.

It is possible that you may have a bruise after this treatment, as with all injectable treatments. You may find chewing particularly tough pieces of food more difficult.

For the first 2 years a treatment every 4 months is recommended. After this, treatments can be either at a reduced dose or less frequently.
